Our Well Containment Solution
HWCG has invested in the best available technology, engineering and minds, applying important lessons learned from the past, to create a comprehensive well-containment solution. Our equipment, procedures and processes are ready to be activated immediately in the event of a deepwater spill.
Planning and Preparedness
In collaboration with the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), HWCG has developed a comprehensive Well Containment Plan with detailed technical procedures and clearly identified response protocols for three different foreseeable deepwater containment scenarios. The HWCG Well Containment Plan serves as the basis for our members’ response protocols.
Throughout each year, members of HWCG conduct a series of crisis exercises and drills to increase coordination and preparedness. We strive for continuous improvement, utilizing the equipment and well containment plan to effectively practice responding to an actual event.
HWCG created a Deepwater Intervention Technical Committee (DITC), comprised of more than thirty technical industry experts, to establish and develop processes and procedures that can be implemented in the event of a deepwater incident. Drawing from the experience of both our members and service partners, the DITC promotes the technological advancement of our response system, including recommending and prioritizing upgrades to thermal and pressure ratings, allowing us to stay well ahead of member need.
Beyond the baseline government requirements, each HWCG member company has committed to a mutual aid agreement, allowing members to draw upon the collective technical expertise, assets and resources of the entire group in the event of an incident. Our two dual ram capping stacks are the core components of our subsea incident response system. These capping stacks can be deployed to effectively shut-in and contain a subsea spill. In a situation where extreme well pressure may prevent a complete seal, we can deploy our capture and flow containment structure. Using the flowback method, hydrocarbons are collected and safely transported via risers to a storage vessel on the surface. Learn more about our response system equipment.
